Our Story

Apex was founded in 2005 by Joe and Angie McGilvrey, Chicago natives who moved to Southwest Florida with a vision of creating a physical therapist–owned practice in paradise. What began as a bold step toward independence has grown into a destination for those seeking elevated health, performance, and long-term wellness.

In 2016, Apex shifted away from traditional rehabilitation to focus on the underserved athletic population. What started with the CrossFit community quickly expanded into caring for athletes of all ages and levels, united by a desire for better performance, faster recovery, and higher standards of care.

In 2018, Apex began pioneering a true Primary Care PT model by integrating advanced diagnostics into everyday practice. Joe pursued residency training in electrodiagnostics and musculoskeletal ultrasound, adding tools like EMG and MSK testing to get clearer answers, faster. In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, he completed this advanced training and became board certified, solidifying Apex as a first-call resource for athletes seeking precise diagnosis and a confident plan from day one.

In 2019, Joe and Angie rescued a three-legged dog named Petey—now affectionately “PT.” His resilience inspired the creation of a children’s book and a charitable foundation supporting animal rescue and medical assistance, extending Apex’s mission of healing into the community.

In 2022, after Hurricane Ian devastated Southwest Florida, Apex faced the same uncertainty as the rest of the community. Joe and Angie purchased a sprinter van—Apex Prime—anticipating they might need to take their services on the road. What began as a backup plan has become a symbol of service and community connection. Today, Apex Prime brings athlete recovery and education to local events, supports athletic competitions, and each holiday season is filled with toys for Toys for Tots.

In 2025, Apex made its boldest move yet: building a state-of-the-art facility and stepping into its future as a premium medical destination lovingly called APLEX. As Apex continues to grow, APLEX will expand to include functional and regenerative medicine alongside elite physical therapy, athlete recovery, and human optimization—creating an ecosystem for those who want more than traditional care.
